Dreyfusia merkeri is a specialized pest affecting coniferous species, belonging to the Adelgidae family within the order Hemiptera. This insect leads a cryptic lifestyle, forming colonies on young shoots and trunks, which makes early detection during initial stages of infestation quite challenging.

The primary host for this pest is the fir tree (genus Abies), particularly impacting ornamental and forest stands of the Nordmann fir. The insects feed on the plant's cell sap by inserting their stylets deep into the bark or bud tissues, which disrupts the tree's normal physiological processes.

The biology of Dreyfusia merkeri is characterized by a complex life cycle, often involving multiple generations and specific periods of activity. The nymphs typically overwinter on the tree bark, protected by a waxy wool-like secretion produced by specialized glands. As spring temperatures rise, they resume active feeding and rapidly colonize new parts of the crown.

Common symptoms of infestation include the appearance of a white, snowy-looking waxy covering on shoots, premature yellowing and shedding of needles, and the distortion or drying out of young terminal shoots. Severe infestations lead to a general decline in tree vigor, loss of aesthetic value, and potential tree mortality after repeated attacks over several seasons.

To protect plantations, a comprehensive management strategy is required, utilizing both cultural and chemical practices:
