Description

The Caucasian fir aphid (Dreyfusia nordmannianae), scientifically known as the fir adelgid, is a member of the Adelgidae family. It is a highly specialized sap-sucking pest that poses a significant threat to various fir species, particularly Abies nordmanniana, both in forestry and ornamental landscape management.

The pest primarily targets fir trees, feeding on the needles and tender bark of young shoots. By piercing the plant tissues and extracting essential phloem sap, the insect disrupts the host's physiological balance, leading to systemic stress that can eventually cause tree mortality if left unchecked.

The biology of this species is complex, characterized by multiple generations and different morphs. First-instar nymphs (crawlers) typically overwinter on the bark or at the base of needles. As spring arrives, they resume feeding, mature into adults, and secrete a distinctive white, woolly waxy substance that covers them for protection against predators and desiccation.

The hallmark of an infestation is the appearance of white cotton-like tufts on the undersides of needles or in bark crevices. Symptoms of damage include yellowing, curling, and premature shedding of needles. Affected trees exhibit stunted growth, thinning crowns, and, in severe cases, branch necrosis and total tree decline.
