Description
Systematic position: The Baikal bark beetle (Dryocoetes baicalicus) belongs to the order Coleoptera, the family Curculionidae, and the subfamily Scolytinae. It is a significant pest of coniferous forests, primarily affecting trees in Siberian and Far Eastern forest ecosystems.
Host plants: This beetle primarily targets spruce species, with a particular affinity for Siberian spruce. It also occasionally infests fir trees, especially those already weakened by drought, forest fires, or previous biological stressors that reduce the tree's natural defense mechanisms.
Biology and lifecycle: The life cycle is strictly synchronized with seasonal temperature changes. Adults typically overwinter in the forest floor or at the base of the tree trunk. As temperatures rise in spring, the beetles emerge, seek suitable hosts, and bore into the bark to establish mating galleries and lay eggs.
