Birch bark beetle

The Birch bark beetle (scientific name Dryocoetes betulae) is a wood-boring insect belonging to the Curculionidae family and the Scolytinae subfamily. It is a significant pest of birch forests, primarily found in temperate regions where it focuses its feeding and reproductive activities on stressed or declining tree specimens.

This beetle primarily infests various species of the genus Betula. While it thrives on weakened trees suffering from environmental stress, drought, or mechanical injury, high population levels can sometimes lead to attacks on relatively healthy trees, accelerating their decline. Though birch is the primary host, it can occasionally be found on associated trees like alder.

The life cycle is tightly linked to seasonal temperature variations. Overwintering typically occurs in the adult stage, sheltered within galleries under the bark. As spring temperatures rise, the beetles emerge to mate. The female excavates a gallery to deposit eggs, and the resulting larvae feed on the cambium and phloem, carving out a complex network of tunnels that eventually disconnect the tree's vital transport tissues.

The damage caused by Dryocoetes betulae is characterized by the presence of bore dust on the bark surface and the formation of distinct galleries beneath it. This feeding process causes severe physiological stress, leading to crown dieback, leaf discoloration, and eventually the death of the tree. The beetle acts as a primary agent of mortality in stressed birch populations.

Effective management and protection strategies include:

• conducting regular sanitary inspections to identify infested trees;
• prompt removal and destruction of infested wood to prevent beetle spread;
• maintaining high forest vigor through proper silvicultural practices;
• using pheromone traps to monitor adult beetle population activity;
• encouraging biodiversity to naturally support predatory species that hunt larvae and adults.
