Coffee bark beetle

The coffee bark beetle (Dryocoetes coffeae) is a destructive pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae, specifically the subfamily Scolytinae. This small insect is a significant concern for coffee producers, as it specifically targets trees within the Coffea genus, causing damage to their conductive tissues.

These beetles primarily infest the stems and branches of coffee trees. By colonizing the woody parts of the plant, they directly interfere with the tree's health. The severity of the infestation often correlates with the tree's age and environmental conditions, as stressed trees are frequently more susceptible to colonization by these beetles.

The life cycle of Dryocoetes coffeae involves four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adult females bore into the bark to create galleries where they lay their eggs. As the larvae hatch, they feed on the inner bark and cambium. This feeding behavior disrupts the vascular system, preventing the tree from effectively transporting water and nutrients.

Damage symptoms include the appearance of small entry holes on the bark and piles of fine sawdust. As the infestation progresses, the foliage begins to yellow and wither, and in severe cases, the affected branches may die completely. This results in significant yield reduction, as the tree directs its energy toward defense rather than fruit development.

Effective management and control strategies for coffee bark beetles include:

• Pruning and destroying heavily infested branches to reduce the beetle population density.
• Applying systemic insecticides strategically to protect the plants during peak adult flight periods.
