Description
The hairy bark beetle (Dryocoetes villosus) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the Curculionidae family. It is a common species of bark beetle that focuses its activity on deciduous trees, often causing significant damage to weakened oaks in forest ecosystems and landscape plantations.
Host plants primarily include various oak species (Quercus), although the insect is also known to infest chestnut, hornbeam, and beech. The beetle is specifically attracted to trees that are already suffering from environmental stress, such as drought, root rot, or structural damage, which makes them susceptible to colonization.
The life cycle of the species typically involves one generation per year. Adult beetles overwinter in the bark of host trees or within the leaf litter. In spring, as temperatures rise, the beetles emerge and initiate their mating cycle. Females bore into the bark to construct egg galleries, where they lay their eggs in small niches along the gallery walls.
The damage caused by Dryocoetes villosus occurs as larvae and adults excavate galleries beneath the bark, feeding on the phloem and cambium layers. This activity effectively girdles the tree, cutting off nutrient transport between the leaves and roots. Over time, this leads to canopy thinning, yellowing foliage, and eventually total tree mortality if the infestation density is high.
Integrated pest management strategies are crucial for mitigation. Effective measures include the timely removal and destruction of infested timber to prevent the emergence of new adults, maintaining forest sanitation by removing logging debris, and using pheromone traps for population monitoring. Protecting healthy, vigorous tree stands remains the best preventative approach to limit the impact of these beetles.
