Systematic position: Dryoxylon is a genus belonging to the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae, and subfamily Scolytinae. These insects are recognized as wood-boring pests that spend the majority of their life cycle protected within the woody tissue of host trees, making them difficult to manage with conventional contact insecticides.

Host plants: The genus Dryoxylon primarily infests various hardwood and coniferous tree species. In agricultural settings, they are commonly associated with stressed orchard trees, such as apple and pear, while in forest ecosystems, they target weakened deciduous trees, including oak and beech. They typically prefer hosts that have been compromised by drought, frost, or physical damage.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle encompasses egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The female beetle bores into the sapwood or heartwood to construct galleries, where she lays her eggs. Larvae hatch and feed on the woody tissue, creating extensive tunnels that compromise the tree's internal structure. Once mature, larvae pupate within these galleries, and the emerging adults bore out through the bark to find new hosts.

Damage and economic significance: The economic damage caused by Dryoxylon is significant due to the interruption of nutrient and water flow within the tree. The activity of larvae causes structural weakening and predisposes trees to fungal infections and secondary pests. Common signs of infestation include small, circular emergence holes and the presence of fine sawdust or frass accumulating on the bark surface or near the base of the tree.
