Duplachionaspis

Systematic position. Duplachionaspis is a genus of insects belonging to the order Hemiptera, suborder Coccoidea, and the family Diaspididae (armored scale insects). These highly specialized pests lead a sedentary lifestyle, protected by a hard, waxy covering (the scale), which makes detection difficult during the initial stages of infestation.

Affected crops. The primary hosts for this genus are plants within the Poaceae family (grasses). While commonly found on wild grasses, these insects can cause significant damage to agricultural crops, including wheat, millet, sorghum, and other cereals, by sapping vital nutrients and weakening the overall health of the infested plants.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle includes egg, crawler (nymph), and adult stages. Adult females are immobile and remain under their protective scale, where they lay their eggs. Dispersion occurs primarily at the crawler stage; these nymphs move along the plant surface or are dispersed by wind to adjacent plants. Once they settle, they lose mobility and begin secreting their protective shield.

Nature of damage and economic impact. These pests feed by inserting their stylets into the epidermis of stems and leaves to suck out plant sap. This feeding process leads to chlorosis, leaf rolling, stunted shoot growth, and general physiological decline. In cases of high population density, premature tissue necrosis occurs, resulting in significant yield losses and reduced grain quality.

Control measures. Management of Duplachionaspis relies on a combination of cultural and chemical practices. Key strategies include crop rotation and the rigorous removal of wild grasses that serve as alternative hosts. During the crawler emergence period, systemic insecticides are highly effective. These chemicals penetrate plant tissues, targeting the sucking insects and providing reliable protection during critical growth stages.
