Description
Duplaspidiotus claviger is a destructive scale insect species belonging to the family Diaspididae within the order Hemiptera. This pest is recognized for its ability to form dense colonies on host plants, where its protective armor-like cover makes it difficult to detect during the early stages of infestation.
The host range of this insect includes various woody species, particularly those in tropical and subtropical climates. It is frequently observed causing significant damage to citrus plantations and ornamental trees. Because it feeds on sap, it can severely weaken young trees, stunting their growth and reducing their resistance to secondary environmental stressors.
The biology of Duplaspidiotus claviger is characterized by a sedentary adult stage, with the exception of the first-instar nymphs known as crawlers. These crawlers are responsible for the dispersal of the population to new leaves or neighboring plants, often facilitated by wind or movement of infested plant material. Once a crawler finds a suitable feeding site, it settles down and initiates the secretion of a wax-based scale cover.
Damage to the plant is caused by the continuous extraction of plant fluids, which leads to chlorosis, leaf drop, and dieback of twigs. Heavy infestations may even result in the death of the host plant. The accumulation of honeydew on the plant surface often attracts sooty mold fungi, which hinders respiration and photosynthesis, further stressing the plant.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this scale insect. Strategies include:
