Spruce scale

Systematic position: The spruce scale (Dynaspidiotus abietis) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Diaspididae. It is a specialized armored scale insect that primarily targets conifer trees, significantly impacting their health and appearance.

Host plants: This pest predominantly infests various species of spruce (Picea). It is frequently found in both forest settings and ornamental plantings, preferring to settle on the needles where it creates protective scales for feeding and reproduction.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle involves distinct stages including eggs, mobile crawlers, nymphs, and sedentary adults. The females are protected by a hard, waxy shell (the scale), which makes them difficult to control once they have firmly attached themselves to the host plant.

Damage and severity: By sucking sap from the needles, the spruce scale causes discoloration, yellowing, and eventually premature needle drop. Severe infestations can lead to reduced tree vigor, stunted growth, and in cases of extreme population density, the death of young or stressed trees.

Control measures: Management strategies focus on chemical control using systemic or contact insecticides during the crawler stage, which is the most vulnerable point in their life cycle. Integrated pest management, including pruning infested branches and improving overall tree vigor, is crucial for long-term control.
