Myrtle scale

Myrtle scale (Dynaspidiotus myrti) is a small insect species belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Diaspididae. It is recognized as a significant pest that affects various ornamental and fruit-bearing plants, primarily thriving by sap-feeding on the host tissue.

The host range for this pest includes a variety of evergreen and woody plants, such as myrtle, laurel, citrus, and oleander. Because the adult females are sedentary and covered by a tough protective armor, they often go unnoticed until a large colony has formed on the stems or leaves of the host plant.

The life cycle of the myrtle scale consists of egg, crawler, and adult stages. The crawler stage is the most critical period for population dispersal, as the young nymphs move to new feeding sites before settling down to secrete their protective waxy covering. Temperature significantly influences their reproduction rate, allowing for multiple generations per year in warm climates.

Damage caused by this scale insect is systemic and cumulative. As they extract plant sap, they deplete the plant of essential nutrients, leading to yellowing of leaves, leaf drop, and stunted growth. Furthermore, the sticky honeydew secreted by these insects provides an ideal substrate for sooty mold growth, which inhibits photosynthesis and weakens the plant further.

Effective management strategies require a combination of cultural and chemical interventions. Regular inspection is key to early detection. Control measures include:

• Pruning and removing heavily infested stems.
• Applying horticultural oils to suffocate the insects under their scales.
• Using systemic insecticides that are absorbed by the plant.
• Encouraging natural predators or applying biological control agents.

Maintaining proper plant vigor through adequate watering and balanced fertilization helps the host plant withstand infestations and recover more effectively after control treatments have been applied.
