Regnier scale

Dynaspidiotus regnieri is a specialized insect pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Diaspididae (armored scales). This species is a typical sap-sucking pest that remains sessile under a protective scale throughout its life, making early detection of infestations particularly difficult.

The primary hosts of this pest include various deciduous ornamental and forest trees, particularly members of the Fagaceae and Rosaceae families. The scale insect typically colonizes trunks and branches, preferring areas with thinner bark which facilitates the penetration of its mouthparts into the plant tissues for feeding.

The biology of this species involves a mobile crawler stage, which actively moves across the plant in search of a suitable feeding site. Once settled, the larva begins to construct a dense protective shield composed of waxy secretions and exuviae from previous molts, under which it completes the majority of its life cycle.

The damage caused by this pest is primarily due to the exhaustion of the plant through persistent sap extraction. Infested trees show symptoms such as leaf yellowing, premature senescence, bark cracking, and stunted growth. In severe cases, the dieback of individual branches or the entire crown may occur, significantly reducing the aesthetic and ecological value of the plants.

Control measures require an integrated approach including both cultural and chemical practices. Key strategies include:

• Sanitary pruning and removal of heavily infested branches.
• Application of systemic insecticides during the peak crawler emergence period.
• Regular monitoring of host trees to detect early signs of infestation.
