Taxonomy and Classification: Dynastes granti, commonly referred to as the Grant's rhinoceros beetle, is a member of the Coleoptera order and the Scarabaeidae family. It is a large, iconic beetle species recognized by its impressive horns in males. While it plays a functional role in natural decomposition, it can occasionally become a nuisance in agricultural and horticultural settings.

Affected Crops and Host Plants: This species typically affects woody plants rather than herbaceous crops. It is known to feed on the bark and tender shoots of trees, including walnut trees, various oak species, and stone fruits. Young orchards are particularly susceptible to damage if the beetles are present in high local populations.

Biology and Life Cycle: The life cycle of this beetle is strictly tied to organic decomposition. Larvae spend several years within rotting wood or decaying organic matter, feeding on decaying cellulose. Upon reaching maturity, they pupate and emerge as adults. The adult stage is primarily focused on mating and feeding on the bark of living or weakened trees.

Damage and Impact: The primary damage is caused by adults scraping or chewing the bark of branches, which can cause twig dieback and stunt growth. These physical injuries create entry points for secondary pathogens, such as fungi or bacteria, which can cause long-term decline in tree health. If larval populations are high, they may also compromise the structural integrity of dying trees.

Management and Control: To mitigate the influence of Dynastes granti, the following management practices are recommended:

• Sanitize the area by removing rotting logs, stumps, and dead wood where larvae thrive.
• Conduct regular pruning to remove weakened or infested branches.
• Employ light traps during the peak adult activity season to reduce the breeding population.
• Monitor trees for early signs of bark scraping and treat wounds with protective sealants if necessary.
