Systematic position: Dyscinetus morator belongs to the order Coleoptera, family Scarabaeidae, and subfamily Dynastinae. Often referred to as a scarab or dung beetle relative, this insect is recognized as a significant pest in agricultural settings, particularly in areas where moist soil and organic matter are abundant.

Host crops: This beetle exhibits a preference for various Poaceae (grass) family crops. Major crops affected include maize (corn), rice, and sugarcane. Due to their wide host range, they can survive on various wild grasses and weeds surrounding cultivated fields, facilitating their spread into primary agricultural zones.

Biology and life cycle: The species undergoes complete metamorphosis (egg, larva, pupa, and adult). Adults are nocturnal and are strongly attracted to artificial lights, which can sometimes be used for monitoring purposes. Larvae thrive in soil rich in organic matter, where they feed on decaying material but also actively consume the roots of living plants, depending on population density and moisture availability.

Nature of damage and economic importance: Adults feed on the basal stems of young plants, frequently causing the death of the central shoot, a condition often described as "deadheart." The underground activity of the larvae causes root pruning, which stunts the plant, reduces yield potential, and increases the susceptibility of the crop to environmental stresses like drought or nutrient deficiency.

Protection measures: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this beetle. Cultural practices such as deep tillage help disrupt the soil environment and destroy larval habitats. Crop rotation remains a critical strategy to prevent population build-up. In cases of high economic threshold levels, applying soil-incorporated insecticides at planting or using systemic seed treatments can provide necessary protection against early-season infestation.
