Elasmolomus sordidus

Elasmolomus sordidus, commonly known as the groundnut seed bug, belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Rhyparochromidae. It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest that causes substantial economic losses in various warm-climate regions globally.

The primary hosts for this pest include peanuts, soybeans, sesame, sunflower, and sorghum. The insect is particularly destructive because it attacks crops both in the field during the maturation stage and in storage facilities, where it can cause severe damage to harvested seeds and grains.

The biological cycle consists of eggs, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. These insects are well-adapted to soil environments and debris, making them elusive. Their population growth is heavily influenced by environmental conditions, particularly moisture levels and the availability of suitable host seeds for feeding.

Damage is characterized by the bug piercing the seed coat with its rostrum to feed on the inner tissue. This leads to shriveled seeds, reduced oil content, and secondary fungal infections. Even a moderate infestation can lead to significant reductions in germination rates and market quality of the crop.
