Ginger weevil

Elytroteinus subtruncatus, commonly identified as the ginger weevil, is a beetle belonging to the family Curculionidae (order Coleoptera). It is recognized as a significant pest of rhizomatous crops, primarily affecting ginger production in regions where this culture is cultivated commercially.

The primary host for this pest is ginger (Zingiber officinale), although it has been documented attacking various other plants within the Zingiberaceae family. Because the larvae develop inside the plant tissues, the damage is often insidious, remaining undetected until the rhizomes are excavated during the harvest phase.

The biological cycle of the ginger weevil involves the female laying eggs in the base of the stems or within the rhizome tissue. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the core of the rhizome, consuming the edible part and creating intricate galleries. This internal feeding pattern provides protection to the larvae from many external environmental factors and common surface insecticides.

The damage caused by Elytroteinus subtruncatus results in significant weight loss and structural degradation of the ginger rhizomes. These tunnels become entry points for secondary bacterial and fungal pathogens, leading to rapid rotting of the crop. Consequently, the commercial value of the yield is drastically reduced, leading to total loss in severe infestations.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this weevil.

• Implement strict quarantine protocols for all imported ginger planting materials.
• Practice crop rotation to disrupt the life cycle of the insect in the soil.
• Destroy all infested plant debris immediately after harvest to eliminate overwintering sites.
• Monitor adult populations using targeted pheromone or light traps.
• Apply preventative systemic soil insecticides in high-risk areas during the initial planting phase.
