Enoplops is a genus of true bugs belonging to the family Coreidae (leaf-footed bugs) within the order Hemiptera. These insects are common inhabitants of various landscapes, where they occasionally become pests of agricultural crops. Their ability to adapt to diverse environments makes them a persistent, though sometimes localized, threat to plant health.

These bugs primarily feed on a range of herbaceous plants, including various Asteraceae species and vegetable crops. They utilize their piercing-sucking mouthparts to extract phloem sap from leaves, stems, and flower buds. This extraction process not only depletes the plant of vital nutrients but also injects enzymes that may trigger localized necrotic reactions in plant tissues.

The biology of Enoplops follows a hemimetabolous development cycle, consisting of egg, nymphal (five instars), and adult stages. Adults typically overwinter in sheltered areas such as leaf litter, soil crevices, or under organic debris. They emerge in the spring to begin feeding on young, succulent vegetation, which marks the start of the primary infestation period for crops.

The damage caused by Enoplops manifests as chlorotic spots, leaf wilting, and deformation of fruit or inflorescences. Heavy infestations often lead to a significant reduction in plant vigor, stunted growth, and loss of yield quality. In nursery environments or high-value vegetable production, even minor feeding damage can render produce unmarketable due to aesthetic blemishes.

Effective pest management involves a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. Cultural practices, such as removing alternative weed hosts and maintaining field hygiene, are crucial for reducing population density. If monitoring indicates that population thresholds are exceeded, the application of registered insecticides is recommended. Integrated pest management (IPM) should always prioritize products with lower environmental impact.
