Enoplops scaphus

Systematic position. Enoplops scaphus is a species of true bug belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Coreidae. These insects, commonly known as leaf-footed bugs or coreids, are recognized for their potential to act as agricultural pests due to their specialized feeding habits on various herbaceous plants and cultivated crops.

Host plants and damage. The species primarily targets plants within the Asteraceae family. By utilizing their piercing-sucking mouthparts, these bugs extract sap from stems, leaves, and developing seeds. This feeding process causes chlorotic spots, tissue necrosis, and overall stunting of plant growth. In severe cases, the damage to the reproductive structures can significantly reduce yield and quality of the harvested produce.

Biology and lifecycle. The development of Enoplops scaphus follows a hemimetabolous lifecycle, consisting of eggs, five nymphal instars, and adults. Overwintering occurs in the adult stage, typically sheltered under debris, dry leaves, or within the upper layers of soil. As temperatures rise in spring, the adults emerge to feed and begin the mating process to start the next generation.

Typically, there is one generation produced per year. After mating, females lay eggs on the host plants, and nymphs emerge to feed continuously throughout the summer months. The nymphal stages are visually similar to the adults but lack developed wings. They are highly active during warm, sunny days, which facilitates their spread across agricultural fields during the growing season.

Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Enoplops scaphus. Effective practices include:

• Removing weed hosts in and around fields to limit habitat.
• Implementing proper soil tillage to bury plant debris where adults hibernate.
• Monitoring fields during the early stages of crop development.
• Applying targeted insecticides only when infestation thresholds are exceeded to minimize environmental impact.
