These insects are part of the Entiminae subfamily, characterized by the absence of a distinct snout elongation compared to other groups, making them highly adapted to survive in various soil-based environments during their larval stages.

Host crops. This species acts as an agricultural pest affecting a wide array of crops. It is particularly noted for causing damage to cotton, potatoes, legumes, and several fruit-bearing woody plants. The beetle prefers succulent plant parts, causing significant physiological stress to the host plants during their vegetative growth stages.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Epicaerus aurifer involves complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The adults are generally nocturnal, making them difficult to observe during daylight hours. Overwintering occurs primarily in the soil as larvae, which feed on roots, meaning the most critical developmental phase of the pest remains hidden beneath the surface.

Damage and severity. Adult weevils feed on leaves, creating distinct notched patterns along the margins. However, the most severe damage is caused by the larval stage, which feeds on the plant's root system. This feeding behavior restricts water and nutrient uptake, leading to stunted plant growth, chlorosis, and in cases of heavy infestation, the total collapse of the crop.
