Description
The lappet moth (Epicnaptera) belongs to the family Lasiocampidae within the order Lepidoptera. This insect is recognized as a significant defoliator, capable of causing serious damage to various deciduous trees in forest ecosystems, orchards, and urban landscaping environments.
The pest is polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a diverse range of host plants. Preferred species include fruit trees such as apple, pear, and plum, as well as various forest trees like oak, birch, and willow. Their ability to switch between hosts allows them to thrive in various habitats throughout their geographic range.
The life cycle of the lappet moth consists of one generation per year. The larvae overwinter in the second or third instar, usually hiding under bark or in crevices on the branches. In the spring, they emerge to feed on young buds and leaves. Pupation occurs in early summer inside a distinctive, tough cocoon spun on the branches.
The damage is caused primarily by the caterpillars, which are voracious eaters. Early larval stages skeletonize the leaf blades, while older larvae consume the leaves entirely, leaving only the midribs. A major infestation can cause severe defoliation, leading to stunted tree growth, reduced fruit production, and increased susceptibility to other pests.
Effective management requires an integrated approach. During dormancy, physical removal of cocoons and cleaning of tree trunks can reduce the population. Chemical control using registered insecticides is recommended during the larval growth phase. Biological control agents, including parasitic wasps and bacterial sprays, are also viable options for sustainable management.
