Description

The Epicnaptera americana, commonly known as the American lappet moth, belongs to the Lasiocampidae family within the order Lepidoptera. This moth is native to North America and is recognized for its larvae, which can act as significant defoliators when local populations reach high densities.

The larvae are polyphagous and feed on a wide variety of deciduous trees and shrubs. Preferred hosts include species such as birch, cherry, oak, willow, maple, and alder. In some cases, they may also infest orchard trees, potentially impacting overall fruit production and tree vigor if left uncontrolled.

The life cycle typically consists of one generation per year. The insect overwinters as a pupa, protected within a tough, camouflaged cocoon often attached to bark or hidden in leaf litter. Adults emerge in spring to mate and lay eggs, leading to the hatching of larvae that feed throughout the spring and early summer months before pupating again.

The primary damage is caused by the larval stage, which feeds on the leaf tissue. Younger larvae may skeletonize leaves, while older stages consume entire leaf blades, leaving only the primary veins. Severe defoliation stress weakens trees, making them more susceptible to subsequent attacks by secondary pests, pathogens, and environmental stressors like drought.

Management strategies focus on cultural and biological interventions to minimize environmental impact. During the dormant season, inspect bark and branches to manually remove and destroy pupal cases. If larval outbreaks occur, biological pesticides containing Bacillus thuringiensis are effective at targeting young caterpillars. In severe infestations, registered systemic insecticides may be necessary to protect high-value trees.
