Description

Eriococcus is a genus of insects belonging to the family Eriococcidae, often referred to as felt scales. These small, sap-sucking pests are characterized by their ability to produce a protective waxy or felt-like sac that covers the female during her life cycle. Their cryptic appearance often leads to infestations being discovered only when significant damage to the host plant has already occurred.

These pests target a diverse array of host plants, including various ornamental shrubs, woody perennials, and fruit-bearing trees. They are commonly found in sheltered areas such as bark crevices, leaf axils, and branch junctions. By feeding on phloem sap, they deplete the plant’s nutrient reserves, leading to stunted growth, yellowing foliage, and structural weakness of the branches.

The life cycle of Eriococcus typically involves eggs laid within the female's protective sac, followed by the emergence of mobile first-instar nymphs known as crawlers. These crawlers are the primary dispersal stage, moving across the plant to find suitable feeding sites. Once they settle, they undergo further development, with females becoming sedentary and enclosed in their felt-like ovisacs for the remainder of their lifespan.

Infestations result in direct and indirect damage. Direct damage is caused by the extraction of plant sap, which slows down development and reduces flowering or fruiting capacity. Indirect damage occurs due to the secretion of honeydew, which serves as a substrate for sooty mold fungi. This fungal growth blocks sunlight, further interfering with photosynthesis and aesthetic appeal of the host plant.

Managing Eriococcus requires an integrated approach to ensure long-term control:

  • Monitoring plant health to detect initial signs of crawler activity during the growing season.
  • Mechanical removal of infested shoots and branches where colonies are concentrated.
  • Application of horticultural oils during the dormant season to smother overwintering stages.
  • Use of systemic insecticides targeted specifically at the crawler stage when they lack a protective covering.
  • Encouraging natural biological control agents, including parasitic wasps and ladybird beetles, to maintain population balance.
