Boxwood felt scale

The boxwood felt scale (Eriococcus buxi) is a sap-sucking insect belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Eriococcidae. This specific pest primarily targets plants within the Buxus genus. It is a well-known pest in ornamental horticulture, particularly affecting boxwood hedges and topiary forms, often causing significant decline in plant health if left unmanaged.

The primary host for this species is Buxus sempervirens. The scales typically colonize the underside of leaves, leaf axils, and small twigs. Because the adult females are covered in a dense, white, felt-like waxy secretion, they are often mistaken for fungal growth or debris. This protective covering makes them highly resistant to many environmental stressors and conventional treatments.

The life cycle of the felt scale involves distinct stages, with overwintering occurring primarily as second-instar nymphs sheltered under the bark or in protected crevices of the host plant. In the spring, these nymphs mature into adults. Mating occurs, and females produce eggs that hatch into mobile crawlers. These crawlers are the most active and dispersive stage, allowing the pest to spread to adjacent healthy branches or nearby plants.

The damage caused by Eriococcus buxi is twofold. Direct damage occurs through the continuous extraction of plant sap, which leads to leaf yellowing, stunting, and premature defoliation. Indirect damage is caused by the production of honeydew, which serves as a substrate for sooty mold fungi. This black fungal coating covers the leaves, significantly reducing the plant's ability to photosynthesize and leading to poor overall vigor.
