Macadamia felted coccid

Eriococcus ironsidei

Description

The Macadamia felted coccid (Eriococcus ironsidei) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the Eriococcidae family within the order Hemiptera. It is widely recognized as a significant economic pest for macadamia orchards, requiring strict monitoring and management to ensure the viability and productivity of the trees.

This pest exclusively targets macadamia trees (Macadamia integrifolia and M. tetraphylla). The insect colonizes various parts of the host plant, including tender stems, leaf axils, and the surface of developing nuts. Its feeding behavior directly impacts the vitality of the plant and poses a threat to the global commercial cultivation of macadamia.

The biological cycle of Eriococcus ironsidei involves several developmental stages, including egg, nymph, and adult. The females produce a characteristic white, felt-like protective sac in which eggs are laid. The first-instar nymphs, commonly referred to as "crawlers," are the primary dispersal stage, capable of moving to new areas of the tree or being spread by wind and human activity.

Damage caused by the Macadamia felted coccid is primarily due to the extraction of plant phloem sap. This feeding process leads to reduced vigor, chlorosis of leaves, and deformation of young tissues. Furthermore, the secretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which impairs photosynthesis and reduces the market quality of the nuts produced.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this pest. Strategies include cultural practices such as pruning and removing heavily infested wood, which significantly reduces the population reservoir. Chemical control is most effective when targeting the crawler stage with systemic insecticides, and biological control using natural predators can play a crucial role in suppressing populations within balanced orchard ecosystems.
