Description

Systematic position: Ernoporus is a genus of beetles belonging to the order Coleoptera, the family Curculionidae, and the subfamily Scolytinae. These insects are well-known wood-boring beetles that primarily target deciduous trees, with a strong preference for lime species (Tilia).

Host plants and damage potential: The primary hosts are lime trees. While Ernoporus species often attack weakened, stressed, or storm-damaged trees, they are capable of colonizing healthy trees when their population density reaches outbreak levels. This leads to significant damage, resulting in branch dieback or tree mortality.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle begins when adult beetles bore through the outer bark to reach the cambium layer. They excavate gallery systems for egg-laying. The larvae that emerge feed on the nutrient-rich tissues under the bark, creating winding galleries. Pupation occurs in the galleries, and the new generation of adults emerges later to repeat the cycle.

Damage patterns: The presence of Ernoporus is typically signaled by the appearance of small entry holes in the bark and the presence of fine frass (wood dust) on the bark surface. Internal gallery construction destroys the vascular system of the tree, hindering nutrient transport and eventually causing the foliage to wither and the bark to necrotize.
