Description

The Caucasian bark beetle (Ernoporus caucasicus) is a species of beetle belonging to the family Curculionidae and the subfamily Scolytinae. It is recognized as a significant pest primarily targeting deciduous trees, with a strong preference for members of the Tilia (linden/lime) genus.

The biology of this species is centered around the phloem layer of the tree. Adult beetles bore through the outer bark to excavate breeding galleries. Once the female lays eggs, the larvae emerge and begin feeding on the inner bark tissue, creating a network of galleries that eventually girdle the branches or the main trunk, effectively disrupting nutrient transport.

The life cycle involves a complete metamorphosis. Depending on the environmental conditions and regional climate, the beetle completes one or more generations per year. Overwintering typically occurs in the adult stage under the bark or in the forest litter, emerging when temperatures rise in the spring.

The harm caused by this pest is mainly seen in the decline of tree vigor. Initial symptoms include the presence of fine wood dust (frass) around entrance holes on the trunk. As the larval galleries expand, the foliage begins to wilt, and the tree may experience progressive dieback, ultimately leading to death if the infestation is severe.

Effective management strategies prioritize silvicultural practices. Key methods include:

  • Frequent monitoring of tree health to detect early signs of infestation;
  • Prompt removal and disposal of infested or dead wood to reduce local beetle populations;
  • Application of approved insecticides in severe cases;
