Beech bark beetle

Ernoporus fagi

Description

The beech bark beetle (Ernoporus fagi) is a small coleopteran belonging to the family Curculionidae, subfamily Scolytinae. It is a specialist pest that primarily infests trees of the genus Fagus. While often considered a secondary pest, its cumulative impact on forest health can be significant, particularly in drought-stressed or otherwise compromised stands.

The beetle targets the bark of various beech species. It prefers areas with relatively thin bark, such as branches or the trunks of younger trees. Infestations are frequently linked to existing forest stress factors, meaning the presence of the beetle often indicates that the tree is already struggling with environmental conditions or secondary pathogens.

The biological cycle follows the typical pattern of bark beetles. Adults emerge in spring to seek host trees. After boring through the bark, they construct maternal galleries where eggs are deposited. The larvae feed on the cambium and inner bark tissues, creating complex gallery patterns that effectively girdle the affected areas and disrupt nutrient transport within the tree.

Damage caused by Ernoporus fagi involves both localized tissue death and potential systemic decline. Extensive tunneling beneath the bark prevents the flow of photosynthates and water, leading to branch dieback, leaf chlorosis, and in cases of heavy infestation, the mortality of young trees. This destruction of the vascular system reduces the overall vitality of the forest stand.

Management strategies for this pest rely heavily on silvicultural practices. Key measures include:

  • Regular sanitary monitoring to identify and remove infested wood;
  • Prompt extraction of timber to prevent population buildup;
  • Maintaining forest vigor through proper spacing and thinning;
  • Promoting biodiversity to encourage natural predators.
These methods help keep beetle populations below levels that would cause significant economic or ecological damage.
