The linden bark beetle (Ernoporus tiliae) is a small wood-boring insect belonging to the Curculionidae family, specifically the Scolytinae subfamily. This beetle is recognized as a specific pest that targets trees of the Tilia genus, playing a significant role in the degradation of lime tree stands in both forests and urban landscapes.
The beetle primarily attacks Tilia species, preferring trees that are stressed, weakened by drought, disease, or mechanical damage. While they often congregate on fallen or damaged timber, a high population density can lead to successful attacks on healthy, vigorous trees, making them a serious threat to park maintenance.
The life cycle begins with overwintering adults tucked away under the bark or in leaf litter. As temperatures rise in spring, the beetles emerge to seek out suitable hosts. Females bore into the bark to create galleries where they lay eggs, and the subsequent larval feeding creates a network of tunnels that disrupts the tree's vascular system.
The damage caused by this insect is primarily vascular. By feeding on the inner bark (phloem), the larvae impede the flow of nutrients from the leaves to the roots. Visible symptoms of an infestation include "frass" (sawdust-like material) on the bark surface, crown dieback, and bark fissures, often leading to the eventual mortality of the host tree if the infestation is severe.
Effective management strategies focus on silvicultural practices rather than chemical intervention. Key measures include:

- Maintaining tree vigor through proper watering and soil fertilization.
