Description
Eterusia is a genus of moths belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Zygaenidae. These insects are recognized globally by agronomists as significant pests that specifically target tea plantations, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, causing severe damage to leaves.
The primary host plant for Eterusia species is the tea plant (Camellia sinensis). The larvae (caterpillars) are voracious feeders that can strip entire bushes of their foliage in a relatively short period, posing a serious threat to the commercial production and vitality of the tea crops.
The biological cycle follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult moth. Female moths deposit eggs on the undersides of leaves. The larvae go through several instars of development, feeding continuously until they reach maturity. After this phase, they spin tough, spindle-shaped cocoons, often attached to the twigs or bark of the tea plants.
The damage caused by Eterusia is primarily characterized by skeletonization or complete defoliation. When outbreaks occur, the loss of photosynthetic area severely hinders the plant's ability to produce new growth, which leads to significant reductions in leaf yield and may ultimately cause the death of the shrub if infestations remain unchecked.
