Description

Systematic position: Eucryptorrhynchus brandti is a species of beetle belonging to the family Curculionidae (true weevils). It is highly specialized, having evolved to occupy the ecological niche specifically associated with the Ailanthus altissima host tree, which is commonly known as the Tree of Heaven.

Host plants: The primary and exclusive host plant for this weevil is Ailanthus altissima. While this tree is often regarded as an invasive species in many parts of the world, E. brandti acts as a natural limiting factor by targeting both young saplings and mature, established trees.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle is essentially endophytophagous, meaning the larvae develop internally within the host tissue. Female weevils lay eggs under the bark. Upon hatching, the larvae excavate tunnels in the phloem and xylem layers. Once larval development is complete, pupation occurs within these galleries before the adult beetle emerges through the bark.

Damage and pest status: The primary damage is caused by larval feeding, which disrupts nutrient and water transport within the tree. Infested trees often exhibit canopy dieback, wilting, and reduced vigor. Externally, the presence of the beetle is marked by "frass" (sawdust-like debris) ejected from exit holes on the tree trunk and branches.

Control measures: Management of the Ailanthus weevil includes:

  • Sanitary pruning and removal of heavily infested branches or entire trees to reduce the population.
  • Application of systemic insecticides that target the wood-boring life stages.
  • Timing insecticide applications to coincide with adult emergence periods.
