European fruit lecanium

The European fruit lecanium (Eulecanium cerasorum) is a significant scale insect pest belonging to the family Coccidae. It is widely distributed across temperate regions and poses a persistent threat to commercial fruit orchards and ornamental gardens by feeding on phloem sap.

This pest has a broad host range, primarily targeting stone fruits like plum, cherry, peach, and apricot, but it also infests pome fruits such as apple and pear. Because these insects remain stationary for most of their adult life, they are often overlooked until significant population build-up causes visible damage to the plant.

The life cycle involves a single annual generation. The insect overwinters as second-instar nymphs on the bark of twigs and branches. In early spring, these nymphs resume feeding and develop into adult females. After mating, females produce a large number of eggs beneath their hard, rounded shells. By mid-summer, the nymphs, known as crawlers, emerge to settle on leaves and stems.

Damage is caused directly by sap extraction, which weakens the host tree, and indirectly by the production of honeydew. This sugary substance promotes the growth of sooty mold, a dark fungal layer that covers leaves and fruit, severely reducing photosynthetic efficiency and market value of the crop. Severe infestations can lead to shoot dieback and reduced winter hardiness.

Management strategies require careful timing. Dormant oil applications are essential in early spring to smother overwintering nymphs. During the growing season, monitoring for crawler emergence is critical for the application of systemic insecticides or growth regulators. Proper orchard hygiene, including pruning and clearing infested debris, significantly helps in reducing the population density.
