Far-Eastern scale insect

Systematic position: The Far-Eastern scale insect (Eulecanium excrescens) belongs to the Coccidae family within the order Hemiptera. It is a specialized sap-sucking pest, primarily known for causing significant economic damage in specific geographic regions by colonizing the bark and stems of various woody perennial plants.

Host plants: This pest primarily affects members of the Rosaceae family. It is most commonly found on fruit trees such as apple, pear, plum, and cherry, as well as various ornamental shrubs. Its broad host range makes it a persistent threat in orchards and forest nurseries within its established habitat.

Biology and life cycle: The insect's life cycle is characterized by an egg stage, several larval instars, and the adult phase. Adult females form a distinctive, convex, hard shell that protects their eggs. Overwintering occurs mainly as second-instar larvae sheltered in bark crevices. Once temperatures rise in spring, these larvae migrate to young branches to feed and mature.

Nature of damage: The primary injury caused by Eulecanium excrescens results from intensive sap removal, which weakens the plant's vascular system. This depletion leads to reduced growth, yellowing of foliage, and eventually branch dieback. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which creates a dark film on branches and leaves, further hindering plant health.

Monitoring the timing of crawler emergence in early summer is critical for the success of chemical applications, as these juveniles are much more susceptible to control measures than the sessile adults protected by their hardened armor. Maintaining plant vigor through proper nutrition and irrigation also helps trees withstand pest pressure.
