Description
The giant scale insect (scientific name Eulecanium giganteum) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Coccidae. This pest is known for its relatively large size, especially during the reproductive phase when the female develops a protective dome-shaped scale. It is a stationary pest that attaches itself to the stems and branches of host plants to feed on vascular fluids.
The insect primarily targets various species of deciduous trees and shrubs. Willow, poplar, and maple are among the most frequently infested host plants. In cases of severe infestation, the cumulative effect of thousands of insects feeding on a single tree can lead to canopy thinning, branch dieback, and increased susceptibility to other biotic and abiotic stress factors.
The biology of the species follows a univoltine (one generation per year) life cycle. They overwinter as second-instar nymphs, typically tucked into bark crevices or near buds for protection from winter cold. With the arrival of spring, these nymphs move to young shoots to feed and mature. By early summer, the females deposit a large number of eggs beneath their protective shell, providing a stable microenvironment for the developing larvae.
The damage caused by Eulecanium giganteum is twofold: direct sap depletion and the production of honeydew. As the insects feed, they drain energy from the plant, causing stunted growth and chlorosis. Furthermore, the secretion of copious amounts of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold. This black fungus covers leaves and stems, significantly hindering the plant’s ability to conduct photosynthesis.
Effective management strategies require an integrated approach:
- Regular monitoring of tree health, particularly during late spring and early summer.
- Sanitary pruning of heavily infested branches to reduce the total population density.
- Applying horticultural oils in early spring to smother overwintering nymphs.
- Targeted use of systemic insecticides during the peak period of larval crawler emergence.
- Conserving natural predators, such as ladybird beetles and parasitic wasps, which can help regulate pest numbers.
