Description
Systematic position. The Mashona beetle (Eulepida mashona) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Scarabaeidae. It is a recognized agricultural pest native to parts of Africa, primarily known for causing significant damage in sugar cane plantations located in Southern African regions.
Crops attacked. The primary host plant for this species is sugar cane. The larval stages are soil-dwelling, meaning they specifically target the underground parts of the plant, which are vital for the uptake of water and nutrients in high-yielding industrial crops.
Biology and life cycle. Like other members of the Scarabaeidae family, Eulepida mashona follows a complete metamorphosis. Adult beetles emerge to mate, and females subsequently oviposit in the soil. The larvae, which are large and white with dark head capsules, develop underground for an extended period, feeding constantly on organic matter and living roots.
Damage and economic importance. The larvae cause extensive damage by severing roots, leading to the collapse of the root system. This results in poor plant vigor, chlorosis, and widespread die-back of sugar cane stools. Such damage significantly reduces the yield and sugar content, resulting in substantial financial losses for agricultural producers and cane farmers.
Management and control. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is crucial for controlling this beetle. Control strategies include the application of systemic soil insecticides prior to or during planting. Cultural practices, such as maintaining healthy soil structure and managing weed populations, also contribute to population reduction. Biocontrol options, including the use of specialized entomopathogenic fungi, are increasingly utilized to target larvae in the soil profile.
