Systematic position: The wood-boring beetle Euophryum confine belongs to the order Coleoptera, the family Curculionidae (weevils), and the subfamily Cossoninae. It is a small pest primarily known for infesting damp or decaying wood, often found in buildings, stored timber, and outdoor wooden structures.

Biology and life cycle: The insect's life cycle is strictly dependent on wood moisture content. Females lay eggs in crevices or pores of the wood. Upon hatching, larvae bore galleries deep into the wood, feeding on cellulose and associated fungal mycelia. Development from egg to adult usually takes several months, depending on ambient temperature and wood quality.

Affected materials: This pest primarily targets damp wooden structures, structural beams, joists, and timber left in contact with soil or stored in high-humidity conditions. It avoids dry, sound timber, preferring wood already compromised by wood-rotting fungi or excessive environmental moisture.

Damage and pest impact: Damage is characterized by numerous internal galleries filled with fine wood frass. These galleries weaken the structural integrity of timber, potentially leading to the failure of structural supports over time. While the beetle's progress is relatively slow, the accumulative damage can be significant in damp environments.

Control measures: The primary management strategy is moisture control, as the larvae cannot survive in wood with a moisture content consistently below 20%. Recommended actions include:

• Application of deep-penetrating wood preservatives and insecticides.
• Improving building ventilation to lower humidity in crawl spaces and basements.
• Replacing severely infested timber with new, pressure-treated, or kiln-dried wood.
• Regular inspections for emergence holes to detect early signs of infestation.
