Euphoria lurida is a species of beetle belonging to the subfamily Cetoniinae within the family Scarabaeidae. These insects are well-known to entomologists and agronomists as significant pests in their adult stage, as they feed on the floral parts of various cultivated plants, causing both aesthetic and agricultural damage.

This beetle primarily affects decorative and fruit-bearing plants. During the blooming season, the adults feed intensely on petals, pollen, and reproductive organs of roses, fruit trees, and various garden shrubs. This behavior not only impacts the visual quality of ornamental plants but also significantly reduces the yield of fruit-bearing species by destroying the flowers needed for pollination.

The life cycle of the species consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The larvae typically develop in the soil or decaying organic matter, feeding on decomposing plant tissue, which is generally considered neutral or beneficial for soil health. However, the adult stage is the primary concern for growers due to the direct impact on plant reproductive success.

The severity of damage is marked by the consumption of buds and blooms, which prevents successful fertilization and fruit development. In scenarios with high population density, these beetles can cause substantial economic losses in commercial orchards and home gardens. Their ability to move quickly and fly between plants makes them particularly difficult to contain without a systemic approach.

Management strategies for this pest include a combination of mechanical and chemical controls. Hand-picking the beetles in the early morning hours, when they are less active and easier to capture, is a common practice for small-scale gardens. For larger areas, the use of pheromone or light traps is recommended. Additionally, deep cultivation of the soil during the off-season helps to reduce the survival rate of developing larvae.
