The olive psyllid (scientific name: Euphyllura olivina) is a small sap-sucking insect belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Psyllidae. This pest is a major threat to olive groves, specifically targeting the common olive tree (Olea europaea) in many Mediterranean and subtropical regions.
This species is highly host-specific, primarily feeding on the buds, tender leaves, and developing flowers of olive trees. By extracting plant sap, the insect disrupts the normal physiological processes of the tree, which can lead to stunted growth and reduced yields in commercial agricultural settings.
The life cycle of Euphyllura olivina is closely linked to the tree's phenology. Adults overwinter in leaf axils or bark crevices. With the onset of spring temperatures, they emerge to lay eggs. Several generations can occur annually, depending on local climatic conditions and temperatures.
The most visible sign of infestation is the white, waxy secretion produced by the nymphs, which often covers the entire inflorescence like cotton wool.
