Olive psyllid

The olive psyllid (Euphyllura phillyreae) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Psyllidae. It is a significant pest primarily affecting olive trees (Olea europaea). This sap-sucking insect is widely distributed across the Mediterranean basin, where it thrives in the typical climate conditions preferred by olive cultivation.

This pest targets the tender parts of the olive tree, specifically attacking young vegetative shoots, developing buds, and inflorescences. By extracting plant sap, the insect weakens the tree, leading to stunted growth, flower abortion, and a reduction in the overall fruit set, which can cause severe yield losses for producers.

The biology of the olive psyllid involves multiple generations per year. The insect overwinter as adults or older nymphs sheltered within crevices of the bark or among dense foliage. As temperatures rise in early spring, the nymphs begin to feed actively on the emerging flowers and shoots, rapidly increasing the population density through several developmental instars.

One of the most characteristic signs of infestation is the production of white, cotton-like waxy secretions that cover the nymphs. This white mass protects the insects from desiccation and predators. As the nymphs feed, they excrete honeydew, which accumulates on leaves and branches, facilitating the growth of sooty mold that interferes with the plant's photosynthetic process.

Effective management and control measures for the olive psyllid include the following strategies:

• Maintaining proper orchard hygiene through regular pruning to improve airflow and reduce the humidity levels that favor pest outbreaks.
• Monitoring the population density in early spring to determine if chemical intervention is necessary based on economic thresholds.
• Applying selective insecticides that have minimal impact on beneficial insects and pollinators, particularly targeting the early nymphal stages before the tree reaches full bloom.
