Description

Psyllopsis is a genus of insects belonging to the family Psyllidae, commonly known as jumping plant lice. These tiny pests are specialized feeders that primarily target trees in the Acer (maple) genus, causing significant aesthetic and physiological damage to urban and forest landscapes.

The host range of Psyllopsis is relatively narrow, focusing on specific maple species. Both nymphs and adults rely on plant sap as their primary food source. By inserting their stylets into the leaf tissue, they extract nutrients, which disrupts the tree's photosynthetic capability and transport of sugars.

The life cycle of these pests is synchronized with the bud break of their host trees. They typically overwinter as eggs laid near the buds. As spring temperatures rise, nymphs hatch and begin feeding on the undersides of developing leaves, often causing the leaves to curl or form galls.

Damage symptoms are characterized by leaf deformation, chlorosis, and in cases of heavy infestation, premature leaf drop. The weakened condition of the tree makes it less resilient against environmental stressors such as drought or secondary attacks by fungal pathogens or wood-boring insects.

Effective management strategies include:

  • monitoring for early nymphal emergence in early spring;
  • applying horticultural oils or systemic insecticides when necessary;
  • promoting tree vigor through proper irrigation and fertilization.
Integrated pest management emphasizes the use of biological controls, such as lady beetles, to maintain populations below the threshold of economic or aesthetic injury.
