The olive psyllid (Euphyllura olivina) is a hemipteran insect belonging to the Psyllidae family. It is recognized as a significant pest in olive-growing regions worldwide, primarily causing economic damage to commercial olive groves through its sap-sucking activity.
This species is host-specific, feeding primarily on the European olive tree (Olea europaea). The nymphs and adults typically cluster on the tender new growth, flower buds, and young leaves, where they draw essential nutrients from the phloem of the host plant.
The life cycle involves an egg stage, five nymphal instars, and an adult stage. Adults typically overwinter on the bark or within the foliage. With the arrival of spring, they move to the inflorescences to lay eggs, and the nymphs soon cover themselves in a distinct, cotton-like waxy secretion.
The damage caused by these insects includes the stunting of shoot growth and the severe deformation or shedding of flower buds, which leads to reduced fruit set. Furthermore, the secretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which blocks sunlight and hinders photosynthesis.
Effective management requires integrated pest management (IPM) practices. Pruning helps to maintain tree health and reduce micro-environments favorable to the pest. Chemical control is most effective when targeted at the nymphal stage before the waxy coating becomes too dense, often utilizing systemic insecticides or oil-based treatments.
