Strawberry tree psyllid

The strawberry tree psyllid (Euphyllura arbuti) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Psyllidae. This small sap-sucking insect is exclusively associated with trees of the genus Arbutus, making it a significant challenge for nurseries and ornamental gardens where these trees are cultivated.

The host range of this pest is primarily restricted to Arbutus unedo and Arbutus andrachne. Because these trees are often used for their aesthetic appeal and edible fruits, the presence of the psyllid can significantly compromise the plant's health, vitality, and overall ornamental value, leading to stunted growth and leaf deformation.

The life cycle involves incomplete metamorphosis. Adult psyllids overwinter in protected areas, such as bark crevices. As temperatures rise in spring, they resume feeding on the sap of young shoots. Females deposit their eggs on developing buds, ensuring that newly hatched nymphs have immediate access to high-quality nutrients, which facilitates rapid colonization of the host plant.

The damage caused by Euphyllura arbuti is distinct due to the secretion of a white, waxy, cotton-like substance that nymphs produce to protect themselves from predators and environmental stressors. This white matter often masks the underlying damage, which includes leaf curling, shoot tip distortion, and a general decline in the tree's vigor due to the constant extraction of plant sap.

Management strategies require a multi-faceted approach. Monitoring for early signs of the waxy secretion is crucial for timely intervention. Horticultural oils can be effective in dissolving the protective wax and suffocating the nymphs. In cases of heavy infestation, systemic insecticides are often recommended. Additionally, maintaining optimal plant health through balanced fertilization and pruning helps the trees withstand and recover from pest pressure.
