Platypodid beetle

Systematic position. The genus Euplatypus belongs to the order Coleoptera and is part of the family Curculionidae, subfamily Scolytinae, tribe Platypodini. These insects are specialized xylophagous beetles whose life cycles are intimately associated with wood tissue, which they colonize for reproductive purposes.

Host plants. Members of this genus pose a significant threat to a wide range of broadleaved trees. Their host list includes fruit trees such as apples, pears, and peaches, as well as valuable forest species like oaks, beeches, maples, and eucalyptus. The pest is particularly dangerous for weakened trees in orchards, plantations, and forest nurseries.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Euplatypus is characterized by a close symbiotic relationship with ambrosia fungi. Adult beetles bore deep galleries into the sapwood and heartwood, introducing fungal spores. The larvae feed on the fungal mycelium growing on the walls of these tunnels. The life cycle includes egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages, all of which occur within the wood of the host plant.

Damage and economic impact. The primary damage is caused by deep tunneling into the wood, which disrupts vascular transport and weakens the overall structure of the tree. Entry holes in the bark are often marked by the presence of frass (boring dust). In the galleries, the fungal infection causes wood discoloration, which lowers the commercial value of the timber and frequently leads to the premature decline or death of the host tree.

Control measures. Controlling the platypodid beetle is challenging due to its concealed habitat. Key management strategies include:

• timely removal and destruction of infested wood;
• maintaining proper agrotechnical practices to improve tree vigor;
• utilizing pheromone traps for population monitoring;
• application of contact insecticides during the mass flight period of adult beetles.
