Brazilian cotton borer

Systematic position: Eutinobothrus brasiliensis belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. Known commonly as the Brazilian cotton borer, this insect is a specialized pest that targets cotton crops. It is widely recognized in agricultural research as a significant threat to cotton production within its geographic range.

Host plants: The primary host for Eutinobothrus brasiliensis is cotton (Gossypium hirsutum). Unlike other weevils that attack flower buds or bolls, this species specifically targets the stem and the root neck of the plant. This localized feeding behavior makes it particularly destructive to the structural integrity of the young cotton plant.

Biology and life cycle: The insect undergoes a complete metamorphosis. Females deposit eggs into the stem tissue near the soil level. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the stem, creating tunnels within the woody tissue. This larval stage is the most damaging, as they consume the plant's internal structures. After completing their development, they pupate within the stem before emerging as adults to continue the life cycle.

Type of damage and harmfulness: The borer disrupts the vascular system of the cotton plant, inhibiting the transport of water and nutrients. Externally, this presents as wilting, chlorosis, and the structural weakening of the plant base, often resulting in lodging. Severe infestations lead to significant stand loss, forcing farmers to replant or leading to a substantial decrease in the final yield.

Protection measures: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this borer.
