Description
Euwallacea destruens is a wood-boring beetle belonging to the Curculionidae family, subfamily Scolytinae. Known commonly as the teak shot-hole borer, it is a specialized pest that causes significant economic damage to teak plantations (Tectona grandis) by boring into the heartwood of the trees.
The host range is primarily teak, but the insect can occasionally be found on other woody plants. The beetle is a classic example of an ambrosia beetle, as it maintains a symbiotic relationship with specific fungi, which it introduces into the wood to provide food for its developing larvae.
The life cycle encompasses four main stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females are the primary agents of colonization; they bore into the trunk and excavate galleries where they introduce fungal spores. This environment allows the larvae to thrive within the wood tissue, shielded from external environmental factors.
Damage caused by this beetle includes unsightly shot-holes on the bark surface and deep tunneling within the timber. These tunnels weaken the structural integrity of the wood, introduce decay-causing organisms, and effectively degrade the timber, rendering it unsuitable for high-quality commercial purposes.
