Tea shot hole borer

The tea shot hole borer (Euwallacea fornicatior) is a destructive species of wood-boring beetle belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae (subfamily Scolytinae). This insect is categorized as an ambrosia beetle, which means it relies on a symbiotic relationship with specific fungi to survive and nourish its larvae within host trees.

This pest has an extensive host range, making it a severe threat to both agricultural and natural ecosystems. While it is infamous for causing significant economic losses in tea plantations, it also attacks hundreds of other tree species, including avocado, cocoa, mango, citrus, and various native hardwood species in many regions across the globe.

The biology of the beetle is defined by its tunneling activity. The adult female bores into the xylem of the host plant, creating galleries where she cultivates fungal gardens. These fungi act as the primary food source for the developing larvae. Because of this specialized lifestyle, the beetle can thrive in a wide variety of woody materials as long as the fungal symbiont is present.

The damage caused by Euwallacea fornicatior is twofold. First, the mechanical boring creates numerous tunnels that structurally weaken the branches and trunk, often causing them to snap. Second, the introduced fungi trigger dieback, branch cankers, and vascular tissue damage, which severely restricts the flow of water and nutrients, eventually leading to tree mortality.

Management strategies for this pest are challenging due to its concealed habitat. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the standard approach, emphasizing the following:

• Strict phytosanitary inspections to prevent the movement of infested wood.
• Sanitation practices, such as removing and destroying infested branches or entire trees to reduce the beetle population.
• Installation of pheromone-based monitoring traps to detect early infestations.
• Biological control research and ensuring trees remain in good health to prevent successful colonization.
