The Tea shot hole borer (Euwallacea fornicatus) is a destructive wood-boring beetle belonging to the family Curculionidae and subfamily Scolytinae. This insect is primarily recognized as a significant agricultural pest due to its unique symbiotic relationship with various species of fungi, which it introduces into trees to serve as food for its larvae.

The host range of Euwallacea fornicatus is remarkably broad, encompassing hundreds of different tree species. It is particularly notorious for damaging tea plantations, avocado orchards, and a variety of ornamental trees such as maple, oak, and sycamore. Its ability to thrive in diverse climates makes it a serious threat to global agriculture and urban forestry.

The biology of this beetle is defined by its tunneling behavior. Adult females bore deep galleries into the woody tissue, where they inoculate the wood with fungal spores. The developing larvae feed exclusively on the fungal mats grown within these galleries. This complex life cycle allows the beetles to inhabit a protected environment, making them difficult to target with conventional insecticides.

The primary damage is caused by the combination of mechanical boring and the introduction of fungal pathogens, such as Fusarium species. These fungi colonize the tree's xylem, causing vascular wilt, branch dieback, and bark necrosis. Severe infestations lead to the death of the tree, while lighter infestations result in significant reduction of fruit yield and timber quality.
