Systematic position: Euwallacea interjectus is a member of the Coleoptera order, specifically within the Curculionidae family and the Scolytinae subfamily. It is classified as an ambrosia beetle, a group of insects known for their complex symbiotic relationships with fungi that serve as their primary food source.
Host range: This pest is highly polyphagous, attacking a wide variety of woody plants. Common hosts include tea plants, fruit trees such as citrus and figs, and ornamental hardwoods. It often targets trees that are stressed due to environmental factors, making orchard management critical for prevention.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle is deeply intertwined with symbiotic fungi. Adult females bore into the sapwood or heartwood, creating galleries where they cultivate fungi.
