Description

The genus Exelastis belongs to the family Pterophoridae, commonly known as plume moths. These insects are distinguished by their uniquely shaped wings, which are deeply cleft into lobes, giving them a feather-like appearance. Despite their delicate look, they are significant pests in various agricultural settings, capable of causing localized but severe economic damage to host plants.

The pest primarily targets legumes, including beans, soybeans, and cowpeas, as well as several species within the Solanaceae family. Host plant selection is often determined by the availability of tender buds and reproductive structures, which provide the high-nutrient environment required for the development of the larvae. Infestations are most commonly observed in warm and tropical climate zones.

The life cycle of Exelastis follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Eggs are typically deposited singly or in small groups on the underside of leaves or near flower buds. Upon hatching, the larvae, or caterpillars, begin feeding immediately. They are known for their habit of spinning light webs and folding leaves to hide from predators, which also protects them from environmental factors.

Cultural controls such as crop rotation and the destruction of crop debris are essential to disrupt the overwintering cycle.
