Description
Exelastis atomosa is a species of moth belonging to the Pterophoridae family, widely known as the bean plume moth. These insects are easily recognizable by their unique wing structure, which appears feathery or lobed. They are significant pests in tropical and subtropical agriculture, particularly affecting legume-based farming systems.
The primary hosts for this moth include various leguminous crops, with pigeon pea, soybean, and common beans being the most susceptible. The larvae are specialized feeders that focus on the reproductive parts of the plant, including flower buds, blossoms, and developing pods, making them highly destructive to yield output.
The life cycle of the bean plume moth progresses through four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females typically oviposit on the floral parts of the host plant. The larvae then bore into the pods to feed on seeds, completing their development within the pod or on the surface of the plant tissue, depending on environmental conditions.
