Exolontha

Exolontha is a genus of scarab beetles (Scarabaeidae) belonging to the Melolonthinae subfamily. These insects are significant soil pests that pose a threat to various agricultural crops and reforestation projects. As members of the white grub complex, their presence in the soil often goes unnoticed until visible damage to the plant root system occurs.

The host range of Exolontha includes cereals, vegetables, industrial crops, and young fruit or forest trees. The primary damage is caused by the larvae, which live underground and feed on roots. While adult beetles may consume foliage, the larval stage is the most destructive, capable of killing young seedlings and stunting the growth of established plants due to severe root pruning.

The biological cycle of Exolontha is characterized by a prolonged development period in the soil, often spanning several years. Females deposit eggs in organic-rich soils. After hatching, the larvae undergo several larval instars. They exhibit vertical migration patterns in the soil profile, moving deeper to escape extreme temperatures or drought, which complicates standard pest management timing.

Damage patterns typically manifest as sudden wilting and death of plants, often occurring in circular patches across a field. Since the larvae consume the root system, the plants cannot maintain proper hydration or nutrient uptake, leading to yellowing and plant collapse. In nurseries, even a low density of larvae can result in total destruction of sensitive young plant material.

Effective management strategies require an integrated pest management (IPM) approach to target the larvae within the soil environment:

• Deep cultivation and tillage to expose larvae to birds and mechanical damage.
• Application of soil-incorporated insecticides at the time of planting to protect root zones.
• Crop rotation with non-host species to disrupt the pest's reproductive cycle.
• Utilization of biological control agents, such as entomopathogenic nematodes or fungi, that specifically target soil-dwelling grubs.
